The two petitioners in this action are state prisoners convicted of first degree murder and arson in the Superior Court in and for the County of Los Angeles in 1957. They have pursued numerous direct and collateral remedies during the intei’vening years. Histories of the various phases of this litigation can be found in Chavez v.
