REINHARDT, Circuit Judge:

Donald Carter filed suit in state court alleging that his former employer, Smith-Food King; his former union, Retail Clerks Union Local 1428 (“union”); and various individuals associated with those organizations had violated many of his rights as an employee.1 The defendants removed the action to federal court.
