Accused’s unauthorized absence for a period in excess of twenty-one months resulted in his trial by general court-martial. He freely admitted his guilt and, in accordance with his plea, was convicted of a violation of Article 86, Uniform Code of Military Justice, 10 USC § 886. The court-martial sentenced accused to a dishonorable discharge, confinement at hard labor for one year, total forfeitures, and reduction to the grade of E-l. The convening authority reduced the term of confinement to nine months, but otherwise approved the findings and sentence.1…
