The prisoner was convicted of extortion. The verdict of the jury establishes that, availing himself of his position as the head of a labor organization, with branches in almost all sections of the country, he-first threatened and then put into operation a scheme for lessening and damaging, and to some extent destroying the business of a firm of clothing manufacturers because they did not at once obey his demands in respect to the number of apprentices they should employ; and, when they submitted to his dictation and apologized for seeking to do their own business in their own way instead of…
