On December 20, 1993, James R. Evans, Sr., Johnette Brown, and 22 other plaintiffs filed a workers' compensation action, alleging that they had developed an occupational disease caused by exposure to chemicals while working for Courtaulds Fibers, Inc.1 Courtaulds denied compensation, arguing that the plaintiffs' injuries were not job-related.
