BURNS, C.J.

Defendant Roy G. Horn (Horn) appeals the lower court’s July 11, 1989 judgment convicting him of attempted manslaughter, Hawaii Revised Statutes (HRS) §§ 707-702, 705-500 (Supp. 1989). We affirm.

FACTS

During the course of a fight between Horn and Henry Puulei (Puulei) on December 8,1988, Horn slashed Puulei with a knife in the throat, nonfataUy. The State of Hawaii (State) charged Horn in Count I with attempted murder in the second degree and in Count II with assault in the first degree.
