for the Court:

¶ 1. Zenas Tillis, an inmate at Walnut Grove Youth Correctional Facility (“Walnut Grove”), was indicted for the simple assault of Kathy Hogue, a nurse who worked at Walnut Grove, under the enhanced sentencing provisions of Mississippi Code Sections 47-4-1 and 97-3-7. Following a jury trial in the Circuit Court of Leake County, Mississippi, Tillis was found guilty as charged and sentenced to “five years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections [ (“MDOC”) ] ..., to run consecutive to any sentence [Tillis] is presently serving.”1 On appeal,…
