We granted certiorari in this case in order that we might consider the decision of the Court of Special Appeals in Taylor v. State, 28 Md. App. 560, 346 A. 2d 718 (1975), which affirmed Taylor’s conviction of second degree murder, of assault and of two handgun violations. 1 At his trial, Taylor produced a number of character witnesses, each of whom testified that Taylor enjoyed a reputation in his community as a “peaceful man.” On cross-examination, the State was permitted to inquire of two of the character witnesses whether they had heard that Taylor had been convicted in 1963 of “an assault…
