Defendant appeals his conviction of robbery with a dangerous weapon. The relevant trial evidence may be summarized as follows: Barbara Zaehring testified that on 21 January 2001, she was employed as a cashier at Grocery Boy Junior, a Wake County convenience store. Defendant entered the store early that morning, when no other customers were present. He approached the counter, displayed a “black handled knife with a silver blade,” told Zaehring “I want your money,” and then came behind the counter where Zaehring was standing.
