MEYER, Justice.
The prosecuting witness in this case was the five-year-old daughter 1 of defendant. On 28 November 1983, she was living with her mother, father, and baby brother in her paternal grandmother’s house. On that day, her school principal and her grandmother noticed bruising and scratching under her left eye. The victim told her principal that her mother had punished her because she did not know the days of the week. The principal notified the Durham County Department of Social Services (DSS) of the possibility of child abuse. Two social workers met with defendant and her husband.…
