I. Introduction

In Hunt County, Texas, George Briscoe was charged with (1) theft of property worth more than $1,500.00, but less than $20,000.00; (2) giving a false or misleading statement to obtain property or credit in an amount more than $1,500.00, but less than $20,000.00; and (3) theft of property worth more than $20,000.00, but less than $100,000.00. After a jury trial, Briscoe was found guilty of all three charges. On the first charge of theft, he was sentenced to 180 days in state jail.
