Defendant Earl Jones appeals his murder conviction in a 1985 jury trial. Following his arrest, defendant made oral and written statements to police admitting his role in the shooting of a fellow resident of his Chicago apartment building. He was subsequently indicted by a Cook County grand jury and tried on one count of murder, based on accountability. (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1983, ch. 38, pars. 9—1(a)(1), 5—2(c).)
