HOUSTON, Justice.

Jack Griffis sued Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama (“Blue Cross”), seeking to recover damages for Blue Cross’s refusal to pay a claim under his medical insurance policy with Blue Cross. Griffis sought to recover under theories of breach of contract and the tort of bad faith refusal to pay an insurance claim. The trial court granted Blue Cross’s motion for a directed verdict on the bad faith claim, but denied Blue Cross’s motion for a directed verdict on the contract claim and submitted that claim to the jury, which returned a verdict for Griffis in the amount of $968.86.…
