Defendant, Thomas Kokoraleis, was charged by indictment with the murder (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1981, ch. 38, par. 9 — 1(a)(1)) and rape (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1981, ch. 38, par. 11 — 1(a)) of Lorraine Borowski. At the conclusion of a nine-day jury trial, guilty verdicts were returned on both charges.
