Following a jury trial in Superior Court {Abramson, J.), the defendant, Robert Dupont, was convicted of alternative counts of knowing and reckless second-degree murder for the October 2008 stabbing death of his wife, Jo-Ann Francis. See RSA 630:l-b, I(a)-(b) (2007). He appeals, arguing that (1) the trial court erred in failing to specifically describe self-defense as an element of the offense that the State was required to *700disprove, and (2) the manner in which the court delivered its instructions permitted the jury to find him guilty without considering whether he acted in self-defense.
