The instant proceeding was instituted by Justice Edward Thompson, Deputy City Administrative Judge, Civil Division, Supreme and Civil Courts, pursuant to section 217-a of the Judiciary Law, to vacate several hundred default judgments obtained by appellants against consumers on installment sale contracts in actions commenced in the Civil Court of the City of New York.
