In an indictment returned in the circuit court of Kankakee County, Otis Carl Williams and A. D. Clark, Jr., hereafter defendants, and Ernest Jerome Clark, were charged with the murders of General Johnson and Othella Covington. The circuit court allowed Ernest Jerome Clark’s motion for severance. Following a jury trial defendants were convicted of both murders and a three-judge court, convened pursuant to section 5 — 8—1A of the Unified Code of Corrections (Ill. Rev.
