The defendant was tried upon an indictment charging him with the murder of Cary Hatcher, at Warrenville, in Aiken County, on Sunday morning, July 30, 1922. He was convicted of murder, with recommendation to mercy, and sentenced to life imprisonment under the law.

The, evidence for the State tended to establish the following facts: The defendant was a mill deputy, a peace officer, for the industrial community of Warrenville. A few days before the homicide, there had been a Democratic club meeting at which delegates to the county…
