This case has had a tortured and tortuous route through the trial and appellate process of this state. The incident giving rise to this case occurred on October 5, 1983, in Highland Park, when defendant shot a police officer and exchanged gunfire with another police officer. Defendant was arrested and charged with two counts of assault with intent to commit mur der and one count of felony-firearm.
