It has been settled that the judgment of a court of record operates as a lien upon the real estate of the defendant. Whether-this is a maxim of the common law, or was first introduced by the statute of Westminster, 2, is of no importance in this case. The law of 1795, declaring what laws shall be in force, adopts both the common law, and all statutes of the British Parliament, made in aid. of it, prior to the fourth year of James the first.
