El demandante y apelante, Aureo E. Rivera, comenzó a trabajar con Security National Life Insurance Co. (en ade-lante la demandada) como agente de seguros en octubre de 1971. Unos meses más tarde el demandante realizó gestiones cerca de algunos compañeros de trabajo con el propósito de obtener firmas en apoyo de una solicitud de representación de una unión obrera. Tras enterarse de dicha actividad gre-mial la demandada lo despidió de su empleo.
