The defendant-appellant, Bret Ewing, also known as Bret Esau, age 17, was charged in the county court for Merrick County, Nebraska, with false reporting “with the intent... to impede the investigation of an actual criminal matter” in violation of Neb. Rev. Stat. § 28-907(l)(a) (Cum. Supp. 1984). After trial Ewing was found guilty as charged and was sentenced to unsupervised probation for a 31-day period, during which time he was required to complete 15 hours of community service work with the Central City Police Department.
