OPINION

WEISBERGER, Justice.

This is an action wherein the plaintiff, George H. Martin (Martin), seeks compensatory and punitive damages for defamation arising out of an allegedly libelous paragraph contained in an October 19,1977 story printed in the Chariho Times by defendant Wilson Publishing Co. The case was tried in the Superior Court before a jury from August 23 through August 27, 1982. Following the presentation of the plaintiff’s case and again at the conclusion of all of the evidence, the defendants by motion requested that a verdict be directed in their favor.
