These appeals involve the same issue and were consolidated for oral argument and disposition.

The material facts in each are similar. On April 21, 1979, plaintiff Evans was discharged from employment with Gateway Transportation Company (“Gateway”) for being intoxicated on the job. He filed a grievance with his union, Local 710 of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (“the Union”), on May 1,1979.
