I. A. libel, as applicable to individuals, is a malicious publication, tending to injure the reputation of the person libelled, and *215expose him to public hatred, contempt, or ridicule. 2 Kent’s Com. 16, 17 ; Bellows, J., in Smart v. Blanchard, 42 N. H. 137, p. 151. The first of these articles charges the United States forces in Virginia with cowardice, and holds them up as objects of ridicule therefor.
