Sammie Kelley, Jr., a state prisoner proceeding pro se, appeals from the district court’s entry of summary judgment for defendants in his 42 U.S.C. § 1983 action. For the reasons stated below, we reverse and remand.

In his complaint, Kelley alleges that since July 1984 he has suffered from chronic foot problems and that defendants, state prison officials and Menard prison administrators, have refused to provide him with adequate medical treatment. Kelley alleges that defendants have thereby unnecessarily inflicted cruel and unusual punishment on him in violation of the Eighth Amendment.1…
