Alabama State Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO [ASFT], a teachers’ representational organization, challenges several Alabama statutes conferring certain benefits upon a rival teachers’ organization, the Alabama Education Association [AEA], 1 on the ground that such statutes deny appellants 2 the equal protection of the laws guaranteed by the fourteenth amendment and burden their freedom of association guaranteed by the first amendment.
