Ford was convicted of murder and sentenced to death in Coweta County. His conviction and sentence were affirmed in Ford v. State, 255 Ga. 81 (335 SE2d 567) (1985). While Ford’s certiorari petition was pending in the U. S. Supreme Court, that Court issued its decisions in Batson v. Kentucky, 476 U. S. 79 (106 SC 1712, 90 LE2d 69) (1986) , concerning racial discrimination in the exercise of peremptory challenges, and in Griffith v. Kentucky, 479 U.
