The defendant, Alberto Gomez, Jr., was charged with two counts of first degree murder (720 ILCS 5/9—1(a)(2) (West 1994)) and conspiracy to commit first degree murder (720 ILCS 5/8—2(a), 9—1(a)(2) (West 1994)). A jury found the defendant guilty of conspiracy, but was unable to reach a verdict on the first degree murder charges. The trial court declared a mistrial as to those charges. The State requested a sentencing hearing, and the defendant was subsequently sentenced to a term of 14 years in the Department of Corrections for conspiracy to commit first degree murder.
