The appellant, Eddie John Campbell, was convicted of capital murder, as defined, by §§ 13A-5-40(a)(2) and 13A-5-40(a)(4),Code of Alabama 1975, and was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

The evidence as presented by the State tended to establish the following: On December 5, 1987, the Mobile Police Department was notified that a man was down at 1256 Dauphin Island Parkway. Mobile police officers and fire department paramedics responded to this call. Upon arrival, they discovered that a white male, later identified as Johnny Sheffield, was lying in a pool of blood…
