In April 1999, the State charged defendant, Casper Peete, with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon (720 ILCS 5/24 — 1.1(a) (West 1998)). In June 1999, a jury found defendant guilty of the crime as charged. After a joint hearing in September 1999, the tried court denied defendant’s posttrial motion and sentenced defendant to seven years’ imprisonment. That same month, defendant filed a motion to reconsider, and the trial court denied the motion.
