ISSUE

Bankruptcy Code § 522(d)(1) permits a debtor, who elects the federal exemptions, to exempt an interest “not to exceed $7,500.00 in value” in the debtor’s residence. Section 522(f)(1) provides that a “debtor may avoid the fixing of a [judicial] lien on an interest of the debtor in property to the extent that such lien impairs an exemption to which the debtor would have been entitled.”
