REINHARD, Presiding Judge.

Defendant appeals from his conviction by a jury of assault with intent to maim with malice. He was sentenced by the court under the Second Offender Act to a term of twenty years in the Department of Corrections.

Defendant and the victim of the assault, Thelma Johnson, had previously dated and were spending the evening of June 4, 1977 with friends. The victim testified that at approximately 1:00 a. m., following time at several bars, she and defendant began walking toward her home when defendant asked that they go together to a motel.
