In May 1979, the Kings County Family Court considered what was then a case of first impression. The police had arrested a 16-year-old youth and questioned him about acts he had allegedly committed before his 16th birthday. During this custodial interrogation, the police did not follow the set of procedural safeguards then embodied in article 7 of the Family Court Act.
