Christopher Nguyen v. State of Maryland, No. 13, September Term, 2024, Opinion by Booth, J. POLICE OFFICERS—COMMON LAW DUTIES OWED TO THE PUBLIC. To the extent Maryland common law imposes legal duties on police officers, the officers owe those duties to the public, rather than to individuals, absent a special relationship. The State brought a criminal charge of reckless endangerment against a former police officer for failing to protect a member of the public from an assault by another member of the public.
