On February 15, 1990, defendant, Lloyd Wayne Hampton, was charged by indictment in Madison County with three counts of first degree murder (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1989, ch. 38, pars. 9—1(a)(1), (a)(3)), two counts of armed violence (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1989, ch. 38, par. 33A—2) and one count of home invasion (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1989, ch. 38, par. 12— 11). Defendant subsequently pled guilty to the three murder counts, and the armed violence and home invasion charges were dismissed on the State’s motion.
