On March 10, 1989, the defendant, Jerry Jansen, was charged with the offense of eavesdropping. The charging information .stated:

“That on the 30th day of December, 1988, in said County, Jerry Jansen committed the offense of EAVESDROPPING, in that the Defendant knowingly used an eavesdropping device to record a conversation between Robert Campbell and Jerry Jansen without the consent of Robert Campbell, in violation of Section 14 — 2(a), Chapter 38, Illinois Revised Statutes.”

On May 1, 1989, the defendant filed a motion to dismiss the information, alleging that it failed to state an offense…
