The respondent was indicted for a violation of the provisions of R. S., Chap. 126, Sec. 30, which declares that "Whoever blasphemes the holy name of God by cursing, or contumeliously reproaching God, His creation, government, final judgment of the world, Jesus Christ, the Holy Ghost or the Holy Scriptures as contained in the canonical books of the Old or New Testament, or by exposing them to contempt and ridicule, shall be punished” etc. Upon his arraignment he pleaded not guilty.
