Shortly after midnight on July 24, 1983, the defendant, a United States Marine who had just completed basic training, stabbed four recent immigrants from Vietnam in front of or in their three-decker house at 35 Coleman Street in the Dorchester section of Boston. This much is not in serious dispute before us. The defendant was tried and convicted of murder in the first degree of the one victim who died.
