Plaintiff Rufus A. Caldwell, III, challenges the decision of defendant Life Insurance Company of North America (LINA) to deny him disability benefits. The Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA), 29 U.S.C. § 1001 et seq., governs Caldwell's claim in which he alleges entitlement to disability benefits through a group disability insurance policy, which LINA issued to the plaintiffs former employer, Western Atlas International (Western).
