After a jury-waived trial in the Superior Court, the defendant was found guilty on ten indictments charging sexual assault.1 The charges arose after the victim reported that she had been sexually assaulted by her mother’s live-in boy friend from *443the time the victim was nine and one-half years old until she was fifteen years old. During this period the defendant was living with the victim, her siblings, and her mother at their various residences in Lowell.* 2

The defendant appealed from his convictions to the Appeals Court, and we transferred the case to this court on our own motion.…
