FRYE, Justice.

On 12 February 1990, defendant, Joseph Edwin Bromfield, was indicted for the murders and robberies of Annanitra “Star” Jackson and Arlena Elizabeth Redd. Defendant entered pleas of not guilty to the charges and was tried capitally on the theory of acting in concert with Everett “Witt” Monroe. 1

The jury returned verdicts finding defendant guilty of the first-degree murders of both victims under the felony murder rule and guilty of two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon. Following a capital sentencing proceeding pursuant to N.C.G.S. § 15A-2000, the jury recommended…
