Pursuant to this court’s order dated October 17, 2000, petitioner has submitted supplemental papers in support of his argument for equitable tolling which, together with petitioner’s submissions in support of his application for a certificate of ap-pealability, have been considered in response to this court’s order to show cause why the petition should not be dismissed for untimeliness under the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996 (AEDPA), 28 U.S.C. § 2244(d). 1
