Defendant, Jose Angel Loera, was convicted by a jury in the circuit court of Kane County of one count of first-degree murder (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1989, ch. 38, par. 9 — l(a)(l) (now codified, as amended, at 720 ILCS 5/9 — l(a)(l) (West 1992))), two counts of attempt (murder) (Ill. Rev.
