We granted the State’s petition for discretionary review, see Todd v. State, 661 S.W.2d 116 (Tex.Cr.App.1983), in order to make the determination whether the Houston Fourteenth Court of Appeals, in a unanimous opinion by Justice Sears, correctly held that the warrantless search by the police of appellant’s closed overnight bag, which has dimensions of approximately 18 inches in length and 12 inches in width, which search occurred outside of appellant’s automobile, was unlawful.
