Sashay Allen-Brown is a police officer with the District of Columbia’s Metropolitan Police Department. Allen-Brown was lactating when she returned from maternity leave in 2011 and, accordingly, needed to express breast milk during work hours. Upon her return, she sought a temporary assignment that would not require her to go on beat patrol because an officer on patrol duty must wear a bullet-proof vest that can interfere with lactation by causing pain and clogged milk ducts.
