KANNE, Circuit Judge.

Following the dislocation and eventual amputation of his finger, Gregory Smith filed suit against a group of Chicago police officers. Smith alleged that their excessive force and failure to provide medical attention during two separate arrests led to his amputation. During trial, the district court allowed the defense to present evidence of Smith’s heroin use prior to one of the arrests. After the jury found for the defendants, Smith brought this appeal, in which he argues that the admission of that evidence and the references made to it during the defense’s closing…
