FRYE, Justice.

On 8 May 1989, an Alamance County grand jury indicted defendant for first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping of Debbie Leigh Mills Brown. The grand jury, on the same day, also indicted defendant for discharging a firearm into occupied property, first-degree burglary of Charles Steven Barbour’s mobile home, assault by pointing a gun on David B. Sperling and Barbour, and communicating threats to Barbour.
