CLARK, Chief Judge:

Jimmy Lee Gray appeals from the district court’s order denying his petition for habeas corpus relief. We affirm.

I. Background

On June 25, 1976, Derissa Jean Scales, a three-year old girl, disappeared from her parents’ apartment in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Because Gray, who lived nearby, was the last person seen with Derissa, he was questioned by the police about her disappearance.
