TOBRINER, J.

In this proceeding we must determine whether petitioner Antonio Martinez should be granted a change of venue for trial *577on charges pending against him in Placer County. Denying the motion, the trial court ruled against the sought change of venue. Our independent evaluation of the record, however, discloses a reasonable likelihood that a fair and impartial trial cannot be conducted in Placer County. We explain, therefore, why we have concluded that the venue should be changed.
